The Salteen Story

चक्री फूल — तारों की खुशबू। Beautiful star anise — the exotic, licorice-sweet spice in Salteen's most complex blends.

Star anise is one of the most visually striking spices in the Indian pantry — its perfect, geometrically beautiful star shape makes it instantly recognisable. But its appearance belies a potent, intensely aromatic flavour — sweet, deeply licorice-like, with a warm complexity that is distinct from regular anise or fennel.

At Salteen, chakri phool features in certain warming spice blends and selected pickle preparations where its exotic aromatic character adds an unexpected but harmonious dimension. It is used sparingly — one or two whole stars are sufficient to perfume an entire preparation. In sweet preparations, a single star anise bloomed in hot ghee creates an aromatic base that gives the whole laddu a complex, slightly exotic warmth.

Star anise is also the primary source of shikimic acid — the precursor used in the synthesis of antiviral medications — which speaks to the depth of its bioactive compound profile.

Chakri phool in hot ghee smells like the most sophisticated kitchen in the world — sweet, warm, slightly mysterious. One star is enough.

Where It Comes From

🌟 Northeast India — Star Anise

Star anise is grown primarily in Northeast India — particularly in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. We source whole, intact, brightly coloured stars with maximum essential oil content. Fresh star anise should be intensely sweet and licorice-like — faded aroma indicates old or poorly stored spice.
