The Salteen Story

काली मिर्च — जो चुभे भी, लुभाए भी। Sharp, pungent, irreplaceable — black pepper in our banana chips is bold Banaras.

Before chilli reached India from the New World in the 16th century, black pepper was the spice that provided heat to Indian food. It was so valuable that it was used as currency, traded along the Silk Route, and was the primary reason European powers came searching for sea routes to India.

At Salteen, black pepper earns its title as the King of Spices in our Black Pepper Banana Chips — one of our most popular variants. The coarsely cracked pepper provides an intense, building heat that is different from chilli heat — more aromatic, more complex, and with a clean sharp finish that makes you reach for the next chip immediately.

Black pepper also appears in our Ratlami sev spice blend and certain namkeen preparations, where its sharpness adds a sophisticated heat dimension alongside other spices.

Black pepper heat is different from chilli heat. Chilli burns fast and bright. Black pepper builds slowly and stays — it is the more interesting sensation.

Where It Comes From

🌿 Kerala Pepper Vines

The finest black pepper in India comes from the Western Ghats of Kerala — where pepper vines have been cultivated for over 2000 years in humid, shaded conditions. We source Malabar black pepper from Kerala suppliers, selecting whole berries that are dense, dark, and intensely aromatic — then crack them coarsely ourselves for our banana chips.
