The Salteen Story

शहद — जो मीठा भी करे, ठीक भी करे। Raw wildflower honey from Varanasi-region beekeepers — the healing sweetener.

Raw honey is one of the few foods that never expires. Archaeologists have found 3000-year-old honey in Egyptian tombs that was still edible. This extraordinary stability comes from its unique combination of natural sugars, hydrogen peroxide, and antimicrobial compounds — a natural preservative system of remarkable complexity.

At Salteen, we use raw wildflower honey from local beekeepers in the Varanasi region for our honey-based laddus and specialty preparations. This is not the filtered, pasteurised commercial honey that has been processed into a uniform, clear liquid — it is raw, slightly cloudy, variably crystallised, and intensely flavoured with the flowers of the UP countryside.

Please note: honey is not Jain-friendly. Our honey preparations are clearly labelled.

Raw honey from local bees carries the flavour of the flowers they visited — wildflower meadows, mustard fields, and fruit orchards. No two batches are identical. That is its beauty.

Why It Matters

Health Benefits

Raw, unprocessed honey has a remarkable range of health properties — most of which are reduced or destroyed by commercial pasteurisation and filtering.

🦠

Antimicrobial

Hydrogen peroxide and low water activity in raw honey create a hostile environment for bacteria — used as a wound dressing in medical practice.

🌿

Antioxidant

Raw honey contains flavonoids and phenolic compounds that combat oxidative stress and inflammation.

🤧

Cough Remedy

Honey is one of the few natural cough remedies with clinical evidence — as effective as dextromethorphan in some studies.

🍯

Prebiotic

Raw honey contains oligosaccharides that feed beneficial gut bacteria — supporting microbiome health.

Note: The above reflects traditional and general nutritional knowledge. Consult a healthcare professional for personal dietary advice.

Where It Comes From

🐝 Local Varanasi Beekeepers

We source our honey from small-scale beekeepers in the Varanasi region who maintain hives in the countryside surrounding the city — near wildflower meadows, mustard fields, and fruit orchards. The honey is extracted by cold-pressing honeycomb and minimally filtered to preserve its natural pollen, enzymes, and antimicrobial properties.
